Eco-Driving is the current term for more efficient use of an automobile. Most European countries now include elements of it in their basic licensing procedures.
On the Sidorov Precision Driver Training website, it's always been noted that a skilled driver can save on both fuel and maintenance costs without necessarily going slower. We know this from experience in endurance racing, competitions that take six hours or more to complete, such as the 24 Hours of LeMans. Some race drivers routinely squeeze an extra lap or two out of a tank of fuel while maintaining competitive lap times. It's also easier on the machinery.
Fatter wallet, improved safety, and happier passengers, a three-way win.
